Since March 2008, four organizations active in Armenia have come together to form an informal “CSR working group” aimed at promoting the concept of corporate responsibility in the country. The British Council, Eurasia Partnership Foundation, UN Global Compact and American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia organized a conference on the issue in June 2008 and followed that up with a series of one-on-one interviews with leading Armenian companies. Based on feedback received during the conference and interviews, the private sector was divided into four sectors – Information Technology and Communications, Banking and Finance, Manufacturing and Industry as well as Tourism and Hospitality – and an informal business luncheon was held for each sector. Invitees discussed the concept of CSR at the luncheons and heard about CSR projects and ideas from each other.
These activities have allowed the CSR Working Group to generate a wealth of information regarding the understanding and attitude towards CSR held by many companies operating in Armenia, especially in the wake of the global economic crisis which hit the country in early 2009.
